Professional Biography

Lou Sabina is currently a doctoral student in the Social and Comparative Analysis in education Program in the Administrative and Policy Studies Department at the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh. Lou comes to the Institute for Internationa Studies in Education (IISE) with an eclectic background in education, having spent six full years as a high school business teacher and the better part of a year as an elementary school administrator, and now, as a full-time Ph.D. student. Sabina began his professional career in education at the University of Pittsburgh, as a full-time student in the College of Business Administration seeking a bachelor’s degree in business along with teaching certification while pursuing a minor in African Anthropology. Unfortunately, Sabina was unable to finish his undergraduate teaching certification at the University of Pittsburgh due to the program being discontinued, and transferred to Robert Morris University to complete his undergraduate degree in Business Education.  Sabina remained at Robert Morris for his Masters Degree and certification in Instructional Technology, then attended Point Park University for his certification in Educational Administration. Currently, Sabina is a researcher under Dr. Jennifer Russell in the School of Education and is partnering with the RAND Corporation on a study geared towards school leadership in ten states funded by the Wallace Foundation. In addition to those duties, Sabina is also adjunct faculty at Point Park University and Butler County Community College in the School of Business where he teaches Business Law, Quantitative Methods, Computer Concepts, Accounting, and Salesmanship.

Research Interests & Current Projects

Sabina has a diverse research portfolio, lending itself to a wide array of interests in the fields of business and education. Currently, he is working with Dr. Jennifer Russell on a study involving principal succession planning and will be presenting the findings of that study at AERA in April 2009. Also, Sabina is involved in a study on Turkish Education with colleague, JoEllen Taylor, and will be visitng Istanbul in August 2009 to conduct further research on Turkish Edcuation. Sabina is also working with Dr. James Jacob in two studies, the first being a study on Western Pennsylvania Leadership Styles, and the second being a study on HIV/AIDS Education in Africa. Independently, Sabina is working on a study regarding cohesion among principal certification training providers in the nine colleges and universities that offer principal certification in Western Pennsylvania. Sabina is also presenting a paper at CIES as part of a panel discussion with other SCAE colleagues on the Internationalization of Higher Education in March 2009. Finally, Sabina’s passion for business does not go unrecognized, as he is engaging in a study with Dr. Brad Agle of the Katz School of Business looking at the pedagogy of teaching Business Ethics at the collegiate level, and will be writing his dissertation under the tutelage of his advisor, Dr. Maureen McClure entitled “The Science of Schlock:  Popular Business Literature’s Influence on Education” in which he intends to examine the influence business literature has had in school districts. Ultimately, Sabina’s hopes to earn a faculty position in a Research I University, and is working hard towards this goal.
