Professional Biography
Michele Heryford has been the managing director for the University of Pittsburgh’s Confucius Institute since its establishment in May of 2007 and the assistant director for external affairs for the Asian Studies Center since 1997. In addition to overseeing corporate, public, and external educational projects for Asian Studies, Ms.Heryford is project manager for two web– and CD–ROM-based curriculum projects for post-secondary education. The first, Contemporary Chinese Societies: Continuity and Change(Columbia University Press, 2001 and second edition, 2006) won the Franklin M. Buchanan Prize for outstanding curriculum development from the Association for Asian Studies. The second, Japan: Places, Images, Times and Transformations, will be released in July of 2008. In 2005, Ms. Heryford co-directed and participated in a six-week Fulbright-Hayes field excursion to Mongolia with 12 university faculty members from around the United States. The result of that endeavor was the Contemporary Mongolia Project (www.pitt.edu/mongolia) co-sponsored with the University of Pittsburgh’s Honors College and the Asian Studies Center. The Fulbright-Hayes initiative resulted in the expansion of Mongolian studies research and collaborations by the participating scholars and the development of numerous college level courses being offered at various institutions.
Ms. Heryford has given lectures at numerous academic conferences around the world on issues related to digitized curriculum for higher education, expansion of specialized programs in Chinese studies, and methods for developing collaborative projects with foundations and public institutions.
Research Interests & Current Projects
Ms. Heryford has been a Board Member of the Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater and Festival since 2004. She has also been on the Editorial Board of the Education About Asia since 1998. Ms. Heryford also actively participates in professional and scholarly associations such as the Association for Asian Studies, which she has been a member of since 1996, and the Committee for Teaching about Asia since 1997. She has also been actively involved with the Scholars Engaged in Electronic Resources since 1997. Ms. Heryford was on the Advisory Board of Pitt’s Summer Institute from 1998–2001. She has been on the Selection Committee of the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for International Affairs since 1998. She works with the Pittsburgh’s Urban Redevelopment Authority International Trade Missions/Sister-City Organizations, and has been a committee member on Omiya, India, and Wuhan volunteer boards since 2001. She volunteered with the Habitat For Humanity from 1996–1998 and the Pittsburgh Cares since 1996.
