El-Ghali's research interests are in International and Developing Education, particularly in developing countries. She is interested in looking at development issues in developing countries, predominantly those that are or were recently involved in conflicts, such as in the cases of Iraq, Southern Sudan, and Lebanon. During her course of study, she looked at teachers’ beliefs about decision making in two schools in Lebanon, one with a typical bureaucratic system and another with a progressive one. The project, Mathematics Reform for All in Lebanon (MARAL), looked at high-level thinking, reasoning and communication in elementary mathematics and culturally specific ways of engaging students in high level thinking, reasoning and communication. It also looked at teacher development opportunities based on the data collected and analyzed. She also created the project’s database and helped develop teacher training series.
